For the second year, another group of physicists from the University of Zakho visited the University of Oldenburg/ Germany, which is a partner university of UoZ, from the beginning of August till the end of September 2014. This is the result of a DAAD program called German-Iraqi University Twinning Program which has been applied from the University of Zakho with their partner, the University of Oldenburg/ Germany.

The group consisted of three persons including two academic staff members and one master student from the Department of Physics under the supervision of Dr. Diyar Mayi. The goal of the visiting, as before, was to get experience and expertise in a field of nanotechnology and consequently promote the process of knowledge transfer in this new field. During the two months, the group has conducted their measurements successfully with different projects. Two projects have been distributed between the groups. The first project consisted of Ms. Wasfiya Ali and the master student Chiayee Salih Ajaj. They construct a home-made mode-locked femtosecond laser (1 femtosecond = 10^(-15) second). They could successfully contrasted the laser system including the resonator, Ti:sapphire crystal gain medium and all other optical mirror. This system is important for different kind applications and we are planning to construct such system in department of physics. The second project has been done by Ms. Muhaj Talib with Dr. Diyar Mayi. They have worked on the so called Electron-Beam Lithography (EBL) to fabricate nanostructure. EBL is a technique which is now mostly used to fabricate nanostructure with a resolution of few nanometer length scales. Ms. Muhaj Talib and Dr. Diyar Mayi expertise the procedure needed in EBL to fabricate nanostructure. The results of the two projects are displayed in the attached images of this report.

At the end, a two day summer school entitled Second Iraqi- German Summerschool on Nanophotonics was held at the Hanse- Scientific College (Hanse- Wissenschaftskolleg) in Delmenhorst/ Germany. In addition to the visited group and around 30 participants from different German universities, Dr. Narin A. Abdulkarim and Dr. Haval Bashar Balatay, both physicists from the Department of Physics at the University of Zakho, participated with a talk about their recent research. This occasion was a good chance for our staff to communicate internationally with other scientists and researchers which promotes our staff to reconstruct higher research in the Department of Physics.
